Sichuan has diverse climates and in the temperate zone with obvious vertical change in climate. By difference in hydrothermal conditions and light conditions, the province is divided into three climatic regions:

The mid-subtropical moist climatic region in Sichuan Basin. The region enjoys sound climate conditions, moist and warm all year round. Annual average temperature is 16℃-18℃, and accumulated temperature 4,000℃-6,000℃. The daily range is small but annual range is large, warm in winter hot in summer, with days free from frost 230 to 340. Cloudy days are more frequently seen and sunny days less. Annual sunshine duration is short, being only 1,000-1,400 hours, 600-800 hours less than that in the downstream of Yangtze River basin. It has abundant rainfall, with annual rainfall of 1,000-1,200 millimeters, of which more than 50% is in summer. Night rain is common.

Subtropical sub-humid climatic region in mountainous area of Southwest Sichuan. Temperature in this region is high all the year round, with annual average temperature being 12℃-20℃. Daily range is large and annual range small, cold in the morning and warm during the noon. The seasons are not clearly divided. It enjoys thick clouds, sunny days, and long sunshine duration, with annual sunshine duration being 2,000-2,600 hours. With relatively little rainfall, the dry and soil damp seasons are clearly divided. Dray season lasts for 7 months, with annual rainfall of 900-1,200 millimeters, of which 90% in May-October. Affected by foehn wind, the river valley has a typical dry-hot valley climate. Obvious vertical climate is seen in the mountainous areas.

Puna climatic region in alpine and plateau in Northwest Sichuan. This region sees large altitude difference and obvious vertical climate change. From the river valley to the ridge, there are subtropical zone, warm temperate zone, middle temperate zone, cold temperate zone, subfrigid zone, frigid zone and permafrost zone. It is dominated by cold temperate zone. The river valley is dry and war, mountainous areas cold and moist, cold in winter and cool in summer, and water not warm enough. The annual average temperature is 4℃-12℃, and annual precipitation 500-900 millimeters. It’s sunny with adequate sunshine. Annual sunshine duration is 1,600-2,600 hours.

Climate in Sichuan in generally characterized with: Obvious monsoon climate, hot rainy season, significant inter-provincial difference; warm winter, early spring, hot summer, raining autumn and cloudy and foggy days, lack of sunshine and long growing season in the east, cold, long winter, basically no summer, adequate sunshine, centralized rainfall and clear dry and rainy seasons in the west; obvious vertical climate change, diverse climates; various meteorological disasters, high frequency of occurrence and large range, mainly including drought, rainstorm, flood and low temperature.
