Energy Resources
Sichuan Yearbook Public House2019-05-20
Sichuan is rich in energy resources, mainly hydro-energy, coal and natural gas, respectively accounting for 75%, 23.5% and 1.5% (including natural gas and oil) of the total.

The theory reserves of hydro-energy in this province is 0.143 billion kW, accounting for 21.2% of the national total, only next to Tibet. Of it, there are 0.103 billion kW of technical exploitation amount, sharing 27.2% of the national total, and 76.112 million kW of economic exploitation amount, accounting for 31.9% of the national total, ranking No. 1 in the country, making this province the largest hydropower development and west-east power transmission base. Water resources are centralized in Dadu River, Jinsha River and Yalong River in mountainous areas in southwestern Sichuan, accounting for about two thirds of the total water resource reserves in Sichuan and being the largest hydropower “high-grade area”. Shares of technical exploitation amount in theory reserves and provincial exploitation amount are 79.2% and 80%. Total installed capacity of the Ertan Hydropower Station over the Yalong River is 3.3 million kW.

Coal resources retained is 12.27 billion tons, mostly in southern Sichuan. The South Sichuan Coalfield in Luzhou and Yibin cities accounts for more than 70% of the total coal reserves proven in this province. There are various types of coal, including anthracite, meager coal, lean coal, soft coal, lignite and peat. Oil and gas resources are mostly natural gas. Oil resource reserves are small. In Sichuan Basin, there are 67.96 million tons of accumulated newly-added geological reserves. It is very rich in natural gas resources, being one of the major basins with oil and natural gas in China. Reserves of natural gas resources has been found to be more than 7 trillion cubic meters, accounting to about 19% of national total. Besides, it is abundant in biological energy sources, including 31.4853 million tons of human and animal excreta, 11.8903 million tons of core wood, 42.1224 million tons of straw and 1 billion cubic meters of marsh gas available for development and utilization each year. It is also rich in solar energy, wind power and geothermal resources, to be developed.
