Water Resources

Sichuan is rich in water resources, taking the lead in China. Multi-year average precipitation is about 488.975 billion cubit meters. Water resources are mostly in rivers and river flows. In this province, there are a total of nearly 1,400 rivers, and thus it is called the “province of thousands of rivers”. Total water resources are about 348.97 billion cubic meters, including 254.75 billion cubic meters of multi-year average runoff volume of natural rivers (accounting for 73% of its total water resources), and 94.22 billion cubic meters of coming water from upstream (accounting for 27% of the total). Besides, there are 54.69 billion cubic meters of underground water resources, including 11.5 billion cubic meters of allowable exploitation. Lakes and glaciers are common. There are more than 1,000 lakes, over 200 glaciers, and some marsh in northwestern and southwestern Sichuan. Water storage of lakes is about 1.5 billion cubic metes, plus that of the marsh, totally 3.5 billion cubic meters.

Characteristics of water resources in Sichuan: Large total volume, per capita resource amount higher than national average, even spatial and temporal distribution, leading to regional or seasonal shortage; water resources are mostly in rivers and river flows, but seasonal distribution in river flows are not even but centralized in June-October, floods and droughts happen sometimes; rivers are rich in twists and turns, good for agricultural irrigation; quality of the natural water is high but pollution is seen in some places.
