Sichuan is situated in southwest China and at the upper stream of the Yangtze River. Its longitude and latitude are 92°21′~108°12′E and 26°03′~34°19′N. It covers 1,075 kilometers east-west and 900 kilometers north-south. Sichuan shares borders with Hunan and Hubei to the east, with Yunnan and Guizhou to the south. Sichuan neighbors Tibet to the west, and Qinghai, Gansu and Shaanxi to the north. Sichuan covers an area of 486,000 square kilometers, ranking No.5 in the country, next to Xijiang, Tibet, Inner Mongolia, and Qinghai.

In 2017, the regional GDP of Sichuan reached RMB 3698.02 billion, an increase of 8.1% according to the comparable prices. The per capita GDP of Sichuan stood at RMB 44,651, a rise of 7.5%.The three industries mix has been adjusted from 11.9: 40.8: 47.3 to 11.6: 38.7: 49.7. The yearly CPI has increased 1.4% from last year, and PPI has risen 6.5% from last year.

In 2017, the yearly gain yield registered 34,984,000 metric tons, a hike of 0.4%. A total of 546,000 hectares of barren mountains and wasteland (sand land) were afforested, and another 71,000 hectares of farmland were effectively irrigated.

In 2017, the industry added value stood at RMB 1,151.73 billion, up 8.3% from the previous year. Enterprises with foreign investment or investment from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan witnessed a growth of 13.4%. The income through the main business of these enterprises reached RMB 35.71 billion, a rise of 18.3%.

In 2017, the total fixed asset investment reached RMB 3,209.73 billion, up 10.2% from the previous year.

In 2017, the total retail sales of consumer goods recorded RMB 1,748.05 billion, an increase of 12.0%. The total income of the tourism industry reached RMB 892.31billion, up 16.1% from previous year. We received 3,362,000 inbound tourists, a rise of 9.9%. The foreign exchange income of the tourism industry reached USD 1.45 billion, up 16.7%.

In 2017, we actually utilized RMB 58.6 billion of foreign investment, an increase of 5.6%. 579 new companies with foreign direct investment were approved, bringing the total number to 11701. The paid-in foreign investment reached RMB 56.1 billion, an increase of 7.5%. 235 companies on the Fortune Global 500 list set up branches in Sichuan. By the end of 2017, 17 countries have established consulates in Sichuan.  

In 2017, the value of new contracted foreign projects stood at USD 7.92 billion, a hike of 13.1%, and our accomplished turnover has registered USD 3.93 billion, a drop of 12.1%. Another 95 companies made investments overseas, bringing the total number to 961.

In 2017, the number of operational projects with investments from other provinces reached 9,357 (including projects carried over from previous years). The paid-in investment from other provinces registered RMB 997.7 billion, jumping 3.8%.

In 2017, our export and import volume reached RMB 460.59 billion, an increase of 41.2%. Of it our export volume stood at RMB 253.85 billion, up 37.4%. Our import volume reached RMB 206.74 billion, up 46.2%. In USD terms, the total volume of tangible goods trade reached USD 68.12 billion, an increase of 38.2%, among which export registered USD 37.55 billion, a rise of 34.4%, and import reached USD 30.57 billion, a hike of 43.1%. The yearly import and export through processing trade reached RMB 258.8 billion, a surge of 43.5%, accounting for 56.2% of the total import and export volume of the province. The import and export through ordinary trade registered RMB 139.72 billion, an increase of 28.8%, accounting for 30.3% of the province’ total export and import volume.

In 2017, the turnover of freight traffic through highway, railway, air and waterway, etc. reached 258.08 billion ton kilometers, an increase of 7.3%. The turnover of passenger traffic reached 169.83 billion passenger kilometers, a rise of 0.7%. By the end of the year, another 6,820 kilometers of expressways had been put into service. The annual inland river port container handling capacity reached 2.33 million TEU.
 
In 2017, the local general public budget revenue hit RMB 357.98 billion, an increase of 9.5%. By the end of the year, the balance of deposits in RMB at all financial institutions had reached RMB 7,159.14 billion, an increase of 9.1% from the end of the previous year. At the end of the year, there were 93 insurers in operation, among which 24 are foreign-funded companies.

In 2017, there were 24,000 schools of all sorts and at all levels in Sichuan Province, with an enrollment of 15.46 million. The total population of faulty members reached 1.078 million, among whom 888,000 are full-time teachers. There were a total of 109 universities and colleges in our province, with a yearly undergraduate (including junior college) admission of 461,000, an increase of 4.9%. A total of 1.5 million students were enrolled in universities and colleges, a rise of 3.7%. 386,000 students graduated from college, an increase of 6.6%. There were a total of 37 graduate schools in our province with a yearly admission of 37,000. The enrollment at graduate schools reached 102,000, and 26,000 students graduated from graduate schools. There were a total of 14 adult universities in our province, with an enrollment of 308,000. A total of 729,000 students attended the self-taught higher education examinations.

At the end of 2017, there were 13 state key laboratories, 197 provincial key laboratories, 16 national engineering research centers, and 185 provincial engineering research centers in Sichuan. In total, there are 24 members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and 36 members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering in Sichuan Province.

In 2017, there were 51 state-owned art troupes, 45 venues for artistic performing, 204 public libraries, 207 cultural centers, 40 galleries, 4578 cultural stations. There were also 252 museums, 175 cultural relics protection and management institutions, 230 state key cultural and historic sites under special preservation, and 139 items on the national intangible cultural heritage list in Sichuan.

According to calculations based on the annual population survey, there were a total of 930,000 newborn babies, and the birth rate reached 11.26%. A total of 580,000 died, and the mortality rate reached 7.03%. The natural population growth rate reached 4.23%. At the end of the year, the permanent population reached 83.02 million, an increase of 400,000, among which 42.17 million were urban residents and 40.85 million were rural residents. Urban residents took up 50.79% of the permanent population, an increase of 1.58 percentage points from the end of the previous year.

In 2017, the per capita disposable income of all residents in Sichuan Province reached RMB 20,580, increasing 9.4% from the previous year.
