In 2014, national territorial area of Sichuan was 486,000 square kilometers, accounting for 5.1% of national total ranking No. 5. But due to the large population, per capita area is lower than national average, leading to serious problems of large population but small land.
Sichuan boast complex and diverse landform, including mountainous areas, hills, plains and plateau, sharing 77.1%, 12.9%, 5.3% and 4.7% respectively. Agrotype is diverse. According to the second general survey of soil, there are a total of 25 great soil groups, 66 subclasses, 137 soil genus and 380 soil species. The number of great soil group and subclass share 43.48% and 32.60% of the national total respectively.
There are 8 first-grade land use types (table 1), 45 second-grade land use types and 62 third-grade land use types. Except for rubber gardens, Sichuan has all the first and second-grade land use types in other provinces, which is very typical in China. Land use is dominated by forestry and husbandry, which are centralized in the mountainous areas around the basin and plateau in the west, accounting for 68.9% of the total land. Plowland is mostly in the eastern basin and hilly areas, a share of 85% of the total of this province. Garden plots are mostly distributed in the hilly areas in the basin and mountainous areas in southwestern Sichuan, accounting for more than 70% of the provincial total. Land for transportation and construction is mainly in the economically developed basin and hilly areas.
