Sichuan is very abundant in living resources, with many rare and ancient animal and plant species conserved. It is one of the precious species gene banks in China and even the world.
It has diverse vegetational forms and rich plants species. There are a total of nearly ten thousand species, accounting for about one third of the national total, ranking No. 2, next only to Yunnan. Among them, there are more than 500 species of bryophyte, more than 230 vascular plant species, 1,620 species of pteridophyte, 708 species of fern, more than 100 kinds (including varieties) gymnosperms, more than 8,500 angiosperms, and 87 species of pine, Chinese fir and cypress, ranking No. 1 in China. Of them, 84 are listed into the national rare and endangered protected species, a share of 21.6% of national total. Among the over 5,500specials of wild economic plants, there are over 4,600 medicinal plants. Contributing to one third of the national medicinal materials, Sichuan is the largest TCM materials production base in China. There are more than 300 species of fragrant plants, making it the largest aromatic oil production base in China. Wild fruit plants are more than 100 kinds, among which kiwi fruit resources rank No. 1 in China and are well-known on international market. It is also rich in fungi resources, with 1,291 kinds of wild fungi, accounting for 95% of the national total. By the end of 2014, the forest coverage was 35.75%, being 0.25 points higher than that 2013.
Sichuan is rich in animal resources, with nearly 1,300 species of vertebrate (a share of over 45% of national total), and beasts and birds accounting for 53% of national total. Among them, there are 217 kinds of beast, 625 kinds of birds, 84 kinds of reptiles, 90 kinds of amphibians, and 230 kinds of fish. There are 145 wild animals of national priority protection, accounting for 39.6% of the national total and ranking No. 1. According to the third national giant panda survey, number of Sichuan wild giant panda was 1,206, a share of 76% of national total. And the number of population quantity is at the top in China. Among animals, 50% are available for economic use, including 200 kinds for fur, leather and feather use and more than 340 for medicine. Sichuan is also rich in pheasant resources, including 20 kinds of the birds, accounting for 40% of the national total. Among them, there are many rare and endangered pheasants, such as national first class protected animals the partridge, Sichuan arborophila and green tail monal.
