On July 15, Sichuan Investigation Team under the National Bureau of Statistics released data about the province's economic performance in the first half year of 2021 at a press conference.
Data showed that the total sown area of summer grain was 16,355,000 mu(about 1,090,333 hectares), a year-on-year decrease of 0.4%. The total output of summer grain was 4,292,000 tons, an increase of 29,000 tons, or 0.7%, over 2020. During the summer grain production period, the climate was optimum, improved varieties and technologies were adopted, and there were less severe disasters. Thus, the yield per unit area of summer grain rose slightly to 262.4 kg/mu (18.4 kg/ha), up 2.9 kg/mu (0.2 kg/ha), or 1.1%, over the previous year.
The hog inventory continuously recovered and the number of hogs available for slaughter surged. By the end of the second quarter, the inventory of live pigs reached 44,517,000, up 11.5% from the first quarter and 34% from the same period last year; 29,287,000 hogs were available for slaughter, up 31.4% year-on-year. The hog production has exceeded the level seen in 2017. "The pork price has been stable." The Sichuan Investigation Team under the National Bureau of Statistics analyzed that the over of slack season, mitigating of underselling, and reduction of imported pork gradually stabilized the pork price. It's predicted that around the National Day holiday of 2021, pork prices will approach the break-even point.
In the first half year, the per capita disposable income of residents in Sichuan Province was 14,921 yuan, a nominal increase of 12.2% year on year. The per capita disposable income of urban households was 21,065 yuan, a growth of 10.7% year on year, and that of rural households was 9,330 yuan, an increase of 13.2% year on year. The per capita income of urban households was 2.26 times that of rural households, 0.05 less than the same period last year — the urban-rural per capita disposable income ratio further narrowed. By sources of income, the net income from operations celebrated a strong impetus for growth recovery considering that the consumption market grew steadily and the tourism market recovered strongly.
In the first half of the year, the per capita consumption expenditure of residents in Sichuan Province was 9,841 yuan, a year-on-year increase of 13.4%. The per capita consumption expenditures of urban and rural residents were 12,918 yuan and 7,041 yuan, up 12.0% and 14.3% year on year respectively. The fastest increase appeared in the consumption expenditure on education, culture, and entertainment, and the expenditure on transportation and communication also saw rapid growth. Thanks to the sharp fall in food, such as pork, the consumption expenditure on food, tobacco, and alcohol of both urban and rural residents reduced significantly.
In the first half year, Sichuan Province's consumer price (CPI) went up by 0.1% year on year, relatively low compared to the same period of previous years. Prices of half of the eight categories of commodities and services under investigation were down, and prices of the other half were up. Food prices fell by 2.0%, compared with a 22.6% rise in the same period last year; non-food categories, represented by transportation and communication, medical services and health care, and others, went up by 0.6%. It's safe to conclude that the engine for the increase of CPI has been changed from food to non-food commodities and services.
